The tax "January crunch": Why do you need to request your Certificate of Residence?

Does the tax office treat you as if you never left our beloved land?
Many people originally from the region who have been away for a long time get an unpleasant surprise when they check their accounts: 24% withholdings .
Why does this happen? Because if your bank or the Tax Agency does not have official proof that you live abroad, by default they apply the Non-Resident Income Tax (IRNR) in the most burdensome way, or worse, they withhold it as if you were a tax resident in Spain, creating a double taxation mess.
The solution: The Tax Residency Certificate
This document is your "protective shield." It's issued by the tax authority of the country where you live ( HMRC in the UK, Finanzamt in Germany, the IRS in the US, etc.) and certifies that you already pay your taxes there .
What is it for?
- Avoid double taxation: Thanks to international agreements, you don't have to pay twice for the same money.
- Reduce withholdings: By filing this form, withholdings on interest from your accounts in Murcia can drop drastically or even disappear.
- Peace of mind with the bank: Avoid having your account blocked due to the Money Laundering Law for not having your address updated.
Why does it have to be done now, in January?
Most of these certificates are valid for one calendar year (January to December). If you send the bank one dated 2025, it's very likely that it won't be valid for transactions in the new year.
Murcian advice: Don't wait until you get the first bill. Apply now, while foreign offices are just starting the year, and send it as soon as possible.
Steps to "protect" your savings this month:
- Request the certificate: Search the tax authority's website in your country of residence for the "Tax Residence Certificate" or "Certificado de Residencia Fiscal bajo Convenio" (Tax Residence Certificate under Convention). It's usually a quick online process.
- Send it to your bank in Murcia: There's no need to go in person. Most banks allow you to upload it through their app or send it by email to your account manager.
- Keep a copy: If you have a rented property, this document will be key when it's time to file your non-resident tax return.
