Post-Christmas healthcare: How to manage bills and prescriptions from abroad
1. Did you go to the emergency room in the Region? Request your reimbursement
If you had to go to a Murcian Health Service (SMS) center or a private clinic in Murcia and had to pay because you didn't have your European Health Insurance Card or your insurance didn't cover 100%, don't consider that money lost!
- What you need: The itemized bill and the medical report (the "emergency room report").
- What to do now: You must submit these documents to the health authority in your country of residence (the Krankenkasse in Germany, the CPAM in France, etc.).
- Note: You have a limited time (usually 3 to 6 months depending on the country) to claim reimbursement for medical expenses incurred in Spain. Do it this month!
2. The European Electronic Prescription: Can I use my prescription from the Region here?
If your doctor in Murcia prescribed a treatment for you and you have brought the prescription with you, you will be interested to know that there is European Electronic Prescription Interoperability .
- How it works: If you live in the European Union, many pharmacies can access your Spanish medication record. You only need your ID card and your health insurance card.
- The price issue: Keep in mind that even if the prescription is valid, the price you pay will be that of the country you're in. Sometimes it's more economical to ask your local doctor to "validate" the prescription so it's covered by your current insurance.
3. Have you run out of your "home" medication?
Many take advantage of the trip to bring back medicines that are much more expensive abroad or require endless procedures (such as certain inhalers or specific creams).
Helpful tip: If you've forgotten to buy something and you have a Digital Certificate, you can access the SMS Patient Portal and download your medical history or current prescriptions to show your doctor. This way, you won't have to start the tests from scratch.
4. Renew your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
If you realized at the airport that your card expires in 2026, don't wait until Easter to renew it.
- Online procedure: You can request it in 2 minutes through the Electronic Office of Social Security and they will send it to your address abroad (if you are correctly registered).

One last point: If you've received bills from the Murcia hospital at your address there, don't ignore them. Contact the SMS billing department and provide them with your foreign insurance details so they can sort things out between the relevant authorities.
